Gent survive shootout but scoring drought continues
KAA Gent have just scraped through to the Conference League group stage, but their goal-scoring woes persist. The away match against LNZ Cherkasy ended 0-0, but Gent prevailed in the penalty shootout. It has been since May 21 that Gent last scored an open-play goal in a competitive match. In the last ten games, they have managed just two goals. A worrying statistic for a club that scored 51 goals and conceded 47 last season, finishing fifth in the Jupiler Pro League with 24 points from 13 wins, 7 draws and 12 losses. Their recent form was LDWWW.
What’s wrong with the attack?
Fans and pundits are concerned about the lack of goals. 'We’re through and that’s all that matters,' tweeted one supporter. Another commented: 'This is going to be a long season again.' Communication and cohesion in attack seem to be missing, according to another fan: 'The defence was on point, but the rest... Not a single ball reached Dean and Vergara.'
What’s next?
Gent still have work to do before the league season starts. Their next match is not until February 13, 2027, away to St. Truiden, who finished third last season. Matisse Samoise, currently sidelined with injury, will need to play a key role if fit. The pressure to score will only increase, especially with the club 15 points behind leaders Union St. Gilloise in the title race.
