The City of Gent has chosen to anchor itself strongly in the neighborhoods and municipalities and to vary in disciplines. The operating subsidies for the cultural sector have been awarded today. 88 organizations will receive support for three years. Among the 88 organizations, 39 newcomers will receive structural support for the first time, such as Aifoon, Broei, De Kazematten, Het Scheldeoffensief, MentorMentor, Playfield, Splinter, Zing mee Rabot and Kapel Petit. The last two are initiatives that were previously supported with the neighborhood budget and are now growing as structural partners. With the operating subsidies, the City makes a clear choice for a strong anchoring of culture in the neighborhoods and municipalities (Anker, LouisLou/Upside Down, Ledebirds...), but also for social-artistic initiatives (Dichter bij de Hemel, CAMPUSatelier, Manoeuvre...). There is also extra attention for variation in discipline, ranging from heritage to slam poetry, with a focus on visual arts (Croxhapox, Archipel, Giftshop, Kloppend Hert...), and film (La Luna, Flanders Doc and Courtisane...). We are reforming the cultural subsidies with a clear goal: culture for everyone, in Gent and in the municipalities. From large performances to small neighborhood projects, from established houses to young makers, from Oostakker to Zwijnaarde. I am proud of so much Gent talent that we can support and let grow. Also, sector-crossing initiatives are explicitly encouraged. So, many organizations work together with educational institutions. Finally, the strong link between culture and care is also evident, as can be seen in initiatives from Vrienden van Villa Voortman and Lucinda Ra.
