Gent spent 7.25 million euros on Momodou Sonko in January 2024. Hein Vanhaezebrouck, the former coach of Gent, shared his opinion on the transfer. According to Vanhaezebrouck, Sonko was too expensive for Gent. The market value of Sonko was around four million euros at the time. The pressure from outside plays a big role in the transfer market. If a club receives a lot of money, it also has to spend a lot. Gent is currently in 5th place in the competition, with 29 points from 40 games. The last match was a draw against Genk on May 31, 2026. | Stat | Value | | League standing | 5th | | Points | 29 | | Games | 40 | | Last match | Gent 0-0 Genk (2026-05-31) |
Hein Vanhaezebrouck said that the fans are not satisfied if a player is bought for too little money. People expect a 'big name' with such a budget.
