KAA Gent is suddenly being viewed by analysts as a genuine title contender. The unbeaten leaders of the Jupiler Pro League have taken 22 points from a possible 24 after eight matchdays, surprising everyone.
The abolition of the championship play-offs and points halving this season benefits a team that starts so strongly. Analyst Stijn Stijnen noted the change. "It's different," Stijn Stijnen said. "Last season there were still Play-Offs, now it's already towards the finish line. You certainly can't let them run away." Gent currently sits top with 22 points, one point clear of Club Brugge.
The strong European run, where the club survived three qualifying rounds for the Conference League League Phase, also contributes to the new perception. Former coach Hein Vanhaezebrouck, who once led Gent to the title, sees potential. "Can Gent compete until the end? Why not?" asked Vanhaezebrouck. "It's not like Gent will start losing match after match."
Squad depth is a key asset according to analyst and former player Olivier Deschacht. "But otherwise, everything is double-covered in the squad," explained Deschacht. He highlighted defender Christian Burgess as a key figure. The combination of European and domestic fixtures is the upcoming test. Recent results, including a 0-2 win at Zulte Waregem, show excellent form. The last five league games yielded four wins and a draw.
If Gent maintains this level into January, the title ambition becomes real. The next challenge is the home match against RSC Anderlecht on October 25th. The full schedule and current league table can be found on our fixtures and standings pages. Coach Rik De Mil has vastly exceeded pre-season expectations with his team.
