KAA Gent will be without defender Mouhamed Ngom for a long period. The Senegalese player has suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament and is ruled out long-term, the club announced.
The 26-year-old Ngom sustained the serious injury during the 2-1 victory over Standard Liège last Friday. He was forced off early in that match. Up to that point, he had played every minute of the first seven league games. The club confirmed the news in a statement.
"Mouhamed Ngom has suffered a tear in his anterior cruciate ligament and will be out of action for a long time," the club said. "Everyone within the club stands behind him and wishes him all the courage during his recovery. Courage, Bach."
The injury comes at a critical time. Gent lead the Jupiler Pro League with nineteen points from seven matches, holding a three-point advantage over Union Saint-Gilloise. Coach Hein Vanhaezebrouck's side remains unbeaten this season. The defence, with Ngom as a mainstay, has conceded only four goals.
Ngom joined from Grasshopper Club Zürich this summer on a contract until June 2031. His absence creates a gap in the backline.
